What actually survives in a Fort Hood yard
Just PCSed to Fort Hood? Whatever grew at your last duty station, Central Texas plays by different rules, zone 8b Central Texas, triple-digit summers, months without rain, and a few inches of alkaline clay over solid limestone. Here's the straight list, from Sprigwise, a veteran-founded app that matches plants to yards for a living.
Every plant below is one of the 500 species in our fact-checked database, no guesses, no filler.
Ten that make it here
Full disclosure: "makes it" still means you water it through its first summer. After that, these mostly fend for themselves.

All five get sold around here anyway. The nursery isn't lying to you, the label just wasn't written for Central Texas.

💐 Smooth Hydrangea (Annabelle)
The zone range technically includes 8b, but this is a woodland-moisture plant, Killeen sun and alkaline caliche wilt it by noon, daily.

🫐 Highbush Blueberry
Blueberries need acid soil and a milder summer; Central Texas limestone is the exact opposite. It yellows, sulks, and dies.

🍁 Red Maple
Zone-hardy, soil-doomed: in alkaline caliche the leaves go chlorotic yellow-green, and the heat finishes the job.

🌿 Hosta
A shade-and-moisture plant sold in a drought town, even in shade, one missed watering week in July ends it.

🔵 Blue Fescue
Cool-season grass, 100-degree town. It's compost by the Fourth of July.
